Of the love songs Robbie has written this is my favorite. The thing about a love song is that it takes a very deep and intimate moment and brings it into the wider, public world. So, while the distant lover of the song might feel a bit exposed in the beginning, she is also connected to all the lovers out there separated for a time and yearning to be back together with their heart’s desire. The beauty of the song is that it gives words and music to the feelings of others. The gift of a love song is lifelong… and eternal.
Oh I'm waiting just to be with you/But the days go by so slow/Yes I'm waiting just to be with you/But the time never seems to go.
And the chorus:
Feeling each day go by so long and slow/A song in my head of you and you alone/Im just watching as the time goes by/I'm just waiting till you'll be by my side.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I can hear something like this very clearly in my head.
Was there an earlier version of this that started 'City lights are burning..' and had a slightly different melody and lyrics in places? I can hear it in my head! Did you maybe sing it with The Bread and Beer Band?

The bridge lyrics were:
Oh I'm waiting just to be with you/But the days go by so slow/Yes I'm waiting just to be with you/But the time never seems to go.
